Grand National 2020 Results

Noteable in that due to covid, unfortunately only a Virtual Grand National took place in 2020. A field of 40 horses likely to have participated in the real event took part.  Algorithmically decided the winner was y Potters Corner. There was also a further virtual race made up of the legend of previous Grand Nationals. The result of this saw Red Rum as the winner.

Grand National 2021 Results

Saturday, April 10, 2021 was a red-letter day in the history of the Grand National for several reasons. Firstly, following the cancellation of the 2020 Grand National due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with lockdown restrictions still in place, the race took place behind closed doors for the first time in its history, which dates back to the first half of the nineteenth century. Secondly, the winner, Minella Times, owned by John McManus and trained by Henry de Bromhead, was ridden by Rachael Blackmore, who thus became the first female jockey to win the world-famous steeplechase.

Minella Times arrived at Aintree at the top of his game and, having reportedly schooled well over National-style fences at home, was sent off 11/1 fourth favourite. The eight-year-old led narrowly turning for home, extended his lead to two lengths at the final fence and was ridden out to beat stable companion Balko des Flos by six-and-a-half lengths, thereby giving De Bromhead a notable 1-2 in the race. Only 15 of the 40 runners completed the course, but Irish-trained horses filled the first five places.

The Grand National marked the culmination of a profitable three weeks or so for De Bromhead and Blackmore. At the Cheltenham Festival the previous month, De bromhead became the first trainer to win the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same year, while Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the Champion Hurdle and, with six wins altogether, to be leading jockey at the meeting.

Grand National 2023 Results

On April 15, 2023, the start of the Grand National was delayed for 15 minutes by animal activists, 118 of whom were arrested by Merseyside Police for criminal damage and public nuisance offences. Once underway, though, the race proceeded without further incident.

On good to soft going, as has become customary at Aintree in recent years, the Grand National was won by the 8/1 favourite, Corach Rambler, trained by Lucinda Russell and ridden by Derek Fox. Both trainer and jockey were winning the race for a second time, following the victory of One For Arthur in 2017.

Fresh from victory in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, for the second year running, Corach Rambler made steady headway from Valentine’s Brook on the second circuit to lead at the final fence and looked all over the winner when shaken up to go clear on the run-in.

However, he did, briefly, give his supporters an anxious moment when, approaching the ‘Elbow’, he started to idle in front and carry his head high. Meanwhile, Vanillier, trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridde by Sean Flanagan, who had been 12 lengths behind jumping the final fence, made up ground hand over fist and looked, momentarily, as if he might be a danger. He continued to stay on strongly all the way to the finish line, but Corach Rambler was always doing enough and passed the post two and a quarter lengths to the good. He thus became the third Scottish-trained horse to win the National, after Rubstic in 1979 and the aforementioned One For Arthur.

Grand National 2024 Result

The Grand National has undergone various safety changes in recent, but perhaps none more noticeable than in 2024 when, for the first time in 30 years, the maximum number of runners was reduced from 40 to 34. The start time was also moved forward by an hour and a quarter, to 4pm, with a view to providing safer underfoot conditions for participants. As it happened, on the morning of April 13, 2024, two horses were withdrawn, reducing the total field size to 32 runners, the smallest since 1999.

On the prevailing soft going, the Grand National was won by the 7/1 joint-favourite, I Am Maximus, owned by John McManus, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend. Victory for the eight-year-old was a third for McManus, after Don’t Push It in 2010 and Minella Times in 2021, a second for Mullins, after Hedgehunter in 2005, and a first for Townend.

Winning the Grand National off a handicap mark of 159, or the equivalent of 11st 6lb, could hardly be described as straightforward, but I Am Maximus completed his task with a minimum of fuss. His only semblance of a jumping error came at the penultimate fence on the first circuit, The Chair, where he was less than fluent but, patiently ridden, he was not produced to lead until passing the Elbow, halfway up the run-in. Switched to the outside to make his challenge, he swept past the eventual third, Minella Indo, inside the final hundred yards or so and ran on well to win by seven and a half lengths, with something in hand.
