Grand National 2018 Result
The 2018 Grand National, which took place on April 14, 2018, was run on unusually heavy going, a fact that was reflected by the winning time of 9 minutes and 40.10 seconds, which was the slowest since the pedestrian 11 minutes 0.10 seconds recorded by Red Marauder in 2001, when the ground was bottomless. Two withdrawals on the morning of the race reduced the number of starters to 38, resulting the in the smallest field since 1999, when just 32 went to post. Interestingly, for the first time since 1988, when Gee Armytage, Penny Ffitch-Heyes and Venetia Williams all rode in the National, three female jockeys, namely Rachael Blackmore, Bryony Frost and Katie Walsh, participated.
Total Recall, trained by Willie Mullins, was sent off 7/1 favourite, but made a series of mistakes and was a spent force before the race began in earnest, eventually pulling up before the second-last fence. Another Mullins-trained runner, Pleasant Company, ridden by his nephew, David, fared much better, making up the best part of six lengths from the ‘Elbow’, halfway up the run-in, to go down by a head in a driving finish.
Victory, though, went to the 10/1 joint second-favourite, Tiger Roll, trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by Davy Russell. Fresh from his first win in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival – a race he would eventually win three times – Tiger Roll moved into contention, travelling strongly, three from home and looked all over the winner when taking a six-length lead on the run-in. At the line, though, he was all out to hold on by the aforementioned head.
