Grand National 2016 Result

The 2016 Grand National, which took place on April 9, 2016, was notable for the slowest underfoot conditions – soft, heavy in places – since Red Marauder beat Smarty and just two other, remounted, finishers by a distance on heavy going in 2001. Channel 4 televised the race for the fourth, and final, time, with ITV acquiring exclusive, free-to-air broadcasting rights to British horse racing from Janury 1, 2017 onwards.

In the absence of O’Faolains Boy, a late withdrawal, 39 runners went to post and 16 of them completed the course. They were led home by Rule The World, a largely unconsidered 33/1 chance, owned Gigginstown House Stud, trained by Michael ‘Mouse’ Morris and ridden by 19-year-old David Mullins. Rule The World had won on his sole point-to-point start, as a four-year-old, back in 2011, but despite displaying high-class form, including when second in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse in 2015, remained a maiden over regulation fences prior to the Grand National.

Nevertheless, Rule The World survived a jolting blunder at the fourth-last fence and, given time to recover by Mullins – who was having his first ride in the National – made headway into a close third approcahing the final fence. Switched to the outside on the run-in, he tackled the joint-favourite, The Last Samuri, in the last half a furlong or so and came home strongest of all to win by six lengths. In so doing, he became the first novice to win the Grand National since Mr. What sauntered home by 30 lengths back in 1958.

Grand National 2017 Results

“And Scottish flags are flying high!” or so exclaimed lead commentator Richard Hoiles at the climax of the 2017 Grand National, which was broadcast live on ITV (Independent Television) for the first time. The cause of Hoiles’ excitement was the fact that the winner, One For Arthur, trained by Lucinda Russell in Kinross, central Scotland, became just the second horse trained north of the border to win the Grand National, after Rubstic, trained by John Leadbetter in Denholm, near Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, in 1979.

Owned by Belinda McClung and Deborah Thomson, collectively known, for racing purposes, as ‘Two Golf Widows’ and ridden by Derek Fox, One For Arthur had already enjoyed a successful season, winning twice and finishing a staying-on fifth, beaten just three lengths, in the Becher Chase – over a seemingly inadequate three-and-a-quarter miles on the Grand National Course at Aintree – in between times. Consequently, he was sent off 14/1 fifth favourite for the Grand National proper and never really gave his supporters an anxious moment.

Always travelling and jumping well, One For Arthur led between the last two fences and had the race in safe keeping from the famous ‘Elbow’, halfway up the run-in, staying on strongly in the closing stages to win by four-and-a-half lengths. Winning jockey Fox had spent three weeks at Jack Berry House, the Injured Jockeys’ Fund facility in Malton, North Yorkshire, recovering from a broken wrist and collarbone sustained in a heavy fall in a novice chase at Carlisle the previous month. He had only been passed fit to ride by a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) doctor on the previous Monday and later admitted, “It was touch and go.”

Grand National 2018 Result

The 2018 Grand National, which took place on April 14, 2018, was run on unusually heavy going, a fact that was reflected by the winning time of 9 minutes and 40.10 seconds, which was the slowest since the pedestrian 11 minutes 0.10 seconds recorded by Red Marauder in 2001, when the ground was bottomless. Two withdrawals on the morning of the race reduced the number of starters to 38, resulting the in the smallest field since 1999, when just 32 went to post. Interestingly, for the first time since 1988, when Gee Armytage, Penny Ffitch-Heyes and Venetia Williams all rode in the National, three female jockeys, namely Rachael Blackmore, Bryony Frost and Katie Walsh, participated.

Total Recall, trained by Willie Mullins, was sent off 7/1 favourite, but made a series of mistakes and was a spent force before the race began in earnest, eventually pulling up before the second-last fence. Another Mullins-trained runner, Pleasant Company, ridden by his nephew, David, fared much better, making up the best part of six lengths from the ‘Elbow’, halfway up the run-in, to go down by a head in a driving finish.

Victory, though, went to the 10/1 joint second-favourite, Tiger Roll, trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by Davy Russell. Fresh from his first win in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival – a race he would eventually win three times – Tiger Roll moved into contention, travelling strongly, three from home and looked all over the winner when taking a six-length lead on the run-in. At the line, though, he was all out to hold on by the aforementioned head.

Grand National 2019 Result

The 2019 renewal of the Grand National took place, on good to soft going, on April 6, 2019 and the world-famous steeplechase was won, for the second year running, by Tiger Roll, trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by Davy Russell. In fact, the diminutive nine-year-old was one of 11 runners for the County Meath handler, who beat the previous record for the most entries in a single renewal of the Grand National set by Martin Pipe in 2001.

As he had done in 2018, Tiger Roll won the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on his last start before the Grand National and, despite being 9lb higher in the weights than the previous year, was sent off 4/1 favourite at Aintree. The market support proved well justified as Tiger Roll breezed into the lead between the last two fences, readily drew clear and only had to be ridden out in the closing stages to beat 66/1 outsider Magic Of Light by two and three-quarter lengths.

Thus, Tiger Roll became the first horse since the legendary Red Rum, in 1974, to win back-to-back renewals of the Grand National. He was denied the chance of a hat-trick when the Grand National was cancelled, due to Covid-19, in 2020 and withdrawn by his owner, Michael O’Leary, in both 2021 and 2022, with O’Leary variously describing his official handicap mark as “patently unfair”, “absurd” and “ridiculous”. Tiger Roll was retired from racing in March 2022, after being beaten, rather ironically, by his stable companion Delta Work, also owned by O’Leary, in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival
